Avobenzone

Avobenzone (also known as Parsol 1789) is an ingredient used in sunscreen products to absorb both UVA and UVB rays. Its ability to absorb ultraviolet light over a wider range of wavelengths than many organic sunscreen agents has led to its use in many commercial preparations marketed as "broad spectrum" sunscreens.

Ray bans: seven ways to save your skin this summer
From Men's Fitness, 6/1/04 by Justina Medina

Want two great reasons to load up on sunscreen? OK then: (1) The American Cancer Society reports that more than a million men are diagnosed with skin cancer each year, and sunblock is one of the easiest ways to avoid the disease. (2) Women run from guys with leathery, sun-weathered faces.

HOW TO DEAL

For everyday use, rub on a moisturizing sunscreen after you shower and shave. Lotions that hydrate or contain aloe, antioxidants, or vitamin E help lock in moisture that dry, air-conditioned offices tend to zap away. Our picks: Biotherm's Hydrating Sunscreen gel ($17 @ biotherm.com) and Kiehl's Vital Sun Protection sunscreen ($19 @ kiehls.com).

While working up a sweat, opt for an oil-free, spray-on sunscreen like Coppertone Sport Lotion Sunblock ($10 @ coppertone.com), KINeSYS Performance Sunscreen ($14 @ kinesys.com), or Estee Lauder SunSpray ($20 @ esteelauder.com). Besides providing a truly even layer of protection, sprays won't run or sting your eyes while you bike or climb.

At the beach, pack a sunscreen with an SPF of 30. To protect against both UVA and UVB rays, look for the following ingredients: Parsol 1789 (a.k.a. avobenzone), benzophenones (like oxybenzone), sulisobenzone, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide. Banana Boat Surf ($7 @ bananaboat.com) and Neutrogena Active ($10 @ neutrogena.com) will work fine. Just be sure to apply early and often: Most brands that claim to last all day actually don't.
