Benazepril

Benazepril hydrochloride, brand name Lotensin®, is a medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), congestive heart failure, and chronic renal failure. Side effects

Most commonly, headache and cough. Anaphylaxis and angioedema can occur. Hyperkalemia, or an elevation of potassium levels, can also occur.

Benazepril may cause harm to the fetus during pregnancy.

Contraindications

Benazepril should be discontinued during pregnancy.

Benazepril hydrochloride, brand name Fortekor®, is a medication used to treat congestive heart failure in dogs congestive heart failure, and chronic renal failure in cats.

Fortekor is marketed by Novartis.

Teva, Mylan Laboratories, Eon Labs, Andrx Corp., Ranbaxy Laboratories, Ivax Pharmaceuticals and KV Pharmaceuticals all received final FDA approval for benazepril HCl tablets, the AB-rated and bioequivalent version of Novartis AG's blood pressure treatment, Lotensin. Benazepril HCl tablets are available in 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg strengths. Lotensin had an estimated $335 million in sales in 2003.

Mylan, Andrx and Ivax also won approval for the generic version of Lotensin HCT (benazepril HCl plus hydrochlorothiazide). Lotensin HCT had U.S. sales of more than $80 million in 2003.
