Like the other fibrates, fenofibrate acts on PPARĪ± to reduce cholesterol levels.

A large study in 2005 of fenofibrate in patients with diabetes showed no change in total mortality or coronary artery events, but did show a significant change in overall cardiovascular events, as well as improving some microvascular complications of diabetes.

Fenofibrate approved for new indication

Abbott Laboratories' micronized fenofibrate (TriCor) capsules have been approved for the treatment of patients with Frederickson Type Ia and Ilb hyperlipoproteinemia.

Micronized fenofibrate is approved as adjunctive therapy to diet for the reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B in adult patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia (Frederickson Types IIa and IIb).
