Scientists identify cleft palate gene
From Independent, The (London), 9/2/02

RESEARCHERS HAVE identified a rogue gene that causes babies to be born with a cleft lip or palate, it was revealed yesterday. The faulty gene gives rise to Van der Woude syndrome, an inherited disorder that results in severe disfigurement. Scientists hope that, in years to come, the discovery could lead to treatments during pregnancy which might prevent the condition developing in an unborn child.
