Nicorette is a branded over-the-counter palliative treatment which is used to ameliorate the withdrawal effects involved in quitting smoking. Originally available as a patch for topical application, it was later made available as a chewing gum (composed of nicotine polacrilex) and even an inhaler. All these products contain nicotine as the active ingredient and work by delivering this into the bloodstream.

Novartis - Supplier News - FDA approval - Brief Article
From Drug Store News, 8/12/02

Novartis in July secured approval from the Food and Drug Administration to change its retailer-branded smoking cessation transdermal patch offering. Instead of merchandising Novartis three-step nicotine-replacement system separately, the company soon will revise its labeling and package the Habitrol Take Control quit system in a single box. Novartis officials could not be reached to provide additional details.
