Fans of the epic film, "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," based on the popular Patrick O'Brian novels can now visit the ship that "played" the HMS Surprise in the film at the San Diego Maritime Museum. The museum purchased the ship and it's now a permanent attraction on the city's North Embarcadero waterfront. The museum director said attendance has jumped 50% over last year since the ship arrived. Eventually, the museum will caulk and paint Surprise to make her seaworthy.
The replica 18th century Royal Navy frigate was originally the HMS Rose, a sail training ship out of Connecticut before 20th Century Fox acquired it for the movie. The studio also gave the museum weapons, costumes and props used in the film and left on board in displays. The studio also kept her Royal Navy "look" intact so the possibility of a cinematic sequel remains alive. Surprise joins the Berkeley, the Star of India, the Pilot, and the California on the San Diego waterfront.
