NAME CONFUSION
For the second time, staff at one hospital confused the name of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Lodine (etodolac) with iodine. A patient's chart was erroneously flagged with an iodine allergy, although the patient was allergic to Lodine. The patient wasn't harmed, but the risk of his Lodine allergy going unrecognized was great.
A handwritten "L" or "I" can look similar, as can a typed number "1," lowercase "1," and an uppercase "L" If you see an allergy alert for iodine or Lodine, double-check with the patient to make sure the alert is for the correct medication.
