A Doctor's Guide to Natural Hormone Replacement
From International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, 7/1/03 by Reed-Kane, Dana

A Doctor's Guide to Natural Hormone Replacement

Gerald I. Sugarman, MS, MD, FAAFP Arroyo Grande, California:Lifetime Wellness, 1999. $12.95, http://www.progesteronePower. com, 805-473-3496

This guide contains informative, detailed, and comprehensive information for patients and compounding pharmacists on natural hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Despite the corny phrase Progesterone Power on its cover, this publication is quite an interesting and informative pocketsized reference. Because of the cover, I would not recommend it for physicians because that phrase might distract them and detract from the credibility of the information. However, this is an excellent comprehensive reference for pharmacists and patients who want to know more about natural HRT. The book contains excellent pictures, charts, and diagrams to illustrate points. Chapters include information on estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, thyroid hormone, menopause, perimenopause, osteoporosis, premenstrual syndrome, nutritional supplementation, treatment plans, and laboratory testing. It also reviews the pathophysiology of the menstrual cycle and steroid biosynthesis. Of particular interest to the compounding pharmacist is a section that explains the compounding of natural hormones, dosage forms available, and ways to locate a pharmacy.
