Neighborhood Heart Watch is joining forces with leading AED manufacturer Medtronic, Inc., to launch Keep the Beat, a nationwide campaign designed to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and lifesaving early defibrillation. Keep the Beat is supported by legendary singer/ songwriter James Taylor during his nationwide summer tour, including a sold-out show on July 26 in Indianapolis, the headquarters of NHW.
"James Taylor keeps the musical beat, and through his generosity, we will be able to keep the 'heart' beat by providing AEDs to schools throughout the U.S.," notes leading cardiologist and NHW editor-in-chief Douglas Zipes.
Up to 20 percent of American children and adults are in schools on any given school day. AED programs in schools could mean the difference between life and death for students, educators, parents, and volunteers.
"Through the Keep the Beat campaign, we have an opportunity to save lives in every city we visit through awareness, education and fundraising activities," said Robert White, president of Medtronic Emergency Response Systems. "We are incredibly grateful to James for his support, and to Neighborhood Heart Watch for their role in implementing AED programs in schools. Medtronic has placed AEDs in more than 13,800 schools to date, and we hope to grow that number substantially through this partnership."

NHW readers know that SCA is a leading cause of death in the United States and claims the lives of up to 450,000 people a year, usually without warning. Prompt treatment with a defibrillator can restart the heart in many cases.
