This painstaking new five-part series follows Yorkshire and Hampshire police as they investigate crimes from detection to denouement. It opens with the disturbing case of Shane Collier, believed by the plods to have been murdered by a man called Danny Thompson (above left), who found him sleeping on his girlfriend Colleen's sofa. The case is made harder by the absence of a body, the disappearance of Thompson, and the frightened denials of witness Colleen (above right), whose children provide the only direct witness testimony. Its late hour reflects its unflinching content, as bags are dredged from ponds, dead animals are mistaken for human limbs, and what looks like an ear is found in the rubbish.
CRIME Watching the Detectives (10.55pm BBC1)
DOCUMENTARY What are You Staring At? (9pm BBC2)
VAn affecting documentary whose subjects include former model Barbara Alvarez (above) - who had half her face removed when doctors discovered gangrene in her jaw, during an operation on an abcess - and Vikki Lucas, who lives with cherubism, a rare genetic condition.
DRAMA Teachers (10pm C4)
The robust comedy-drama is sharper, funnier and less gauche for its third series; minus Andrew Lincoln, but ironically more like This Life. Tonight, PE teacher Brian (Adrian Bower, second from right) takes a shine to new teacher Lindsay (Vicky Hall, second from left).
