Dear Dr. SerVaas:
My hands tremble when I hold a cup of coffee or carry a plate of food. The tremors seem to worsen when I'm with a group of people, and I am embarrassed when others notice.
Can you offer me any advice?

It sounds as though you have essential tremor (ET). The condition is also known as familial essential tremor, as it certainly runs in families. Did your ancestors have such tremors?
ET is not the same kind of tremor that people with Parkinson's disease experience. Essential tremor occurs during intentional or voluntary actions; the Parkinson's type is observed primarily while the hands are at rest.
People with essential tremor may wish to hold their plate near the chest. This stabling maneuver is especially helpful when returning from a buffet line.
One reader was prescribed Inderal for mild hypertension with the suggestion that the drug could cause the essential tremor to disappear as well.
This is a very common affliction. Be assured that you are not alone and that no harm from essential tremors has been noted.
My brother, who was an Admiral, had essential tremor to the extent that he was unable to pin medals on sailors. Another of ricer was assigned to the duty during honor ceremonies. The condition didn't affect his ability to lead in the Navy. Our former Governor of Indiana also had essential tremor. During his campaigns for office, he discussed his condition freely with the press to assure them that it was not a sign of any degenerative process. For more on the condition, see "Essential Tremor" in the Sept./Oct. 2004 Post.
