HOT NOW
FAUX REAL
Is it or isn't it? Only the clothing designer knows for sure with trompe l'oeil (pronounced tromp loy)--the hot new look for the fall. French for "deceive the eye," trompe l'oeil depicts the likeness of images in place of the real thing--such as pseudo pocket zippers, mock belts and faux buttons, shown here.
HOT DUO
ABC News Overnight
Former MTV veejay Alison Stewart and HBO Sports commentator Derek McGinty are the coanchors of ABC News Overnight, becoming the first all-Black duo on a network newscast. Unlike its staid, starched colleagues on the evening news, this colorful team delivers breaking stories with panache. Witty, irreverent and charismatic, the two are sure to be a hit with insomniacs and news junkies. ABC News Overnight airs from 2:00 to 5:00 A.M. Check local listings for times in your city.

Heath Update
Keloid Relief Without Surgery
There's new hope for people with keloids, the irregular and often unsightly scar tissue that plagues many people of color. Scientists have developed a Silastic gel that when applied to the keloid nightly (and kept in place with tape) can flatten the scar over time. And researchers are optimistic that the Human Genome Project, which mapped the genetic code, will identify the gene codes for keloids and lead us to an eventual cure.
HOW TO
Date on a Budget
You don't have to break the bank to make a love connection. Here are several great date ideas for $50 and under:
* Have just desserts. Instead of buying an expensive dinner, get coffee and a delicious dessert at your favorite cafe.
* Learn a new skill together. Sign up for a one-time-only class and learn how to invest or make home-made pasta.
* Be art-smart. Check out a museum or photography exhibition.
* Brown-bag it. Pack a lunch and meet at a local football or soccer game.
TIP-OFF
A Winning Personal Ad
Ever thought about placing an ad in the personals columns, but words escaped you? A few suggestions: Be honest. Think of what you'd want to know about someone else and answer those questions about yourself. Be upbeat. Save sensitive information for the first calls or dates. Be careful. Leave all dating info with a friend. And never let your date come to your home until you really know him or her. Keep it brief. A little mystery is alluring.
