Mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS)--a disorder recognized by the Vestibular Disorders Association, the National Organization for Rare Disorders, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (780.4 Syndromes), and the National Institutes of Health--remains relatively unknown in the medical community. This is largely because vestibular test results are negative in patients with this disorder.
This persistent loss of equilibrium has no known cure and can be extremely disabling. It usually follows a cruise or other motion experience. The sensation of rocking, a major symptom, lasts for months or years.
