20 answers to why you can't miss the 2005 Mr. Olympia
From Muscle & Fitness, 9/1/05 by Greg Merritt

A 40th birthday is a rite of passage that frequently captures a person at his peak: neither too young nor too old, mature enough to understand what works best and yet vigorous enough to change for the better. And so it is with bodybuilding's ultimate extravaganza, Joe Weider's Mr. Olympia. This year, the Mr. O celebrates its 40th anniversary, and we've assembled the top 20 reasons why you won't want to miss this landmark Olympia Weekend.

1) Ronnie Coleman The 300-pound behemoth from Texas has won the last seven Mr. O's, setting new standards for fat-free beef. Will he prevail for a record-tying No. 8? Or, at age 41, will he finally relinquish the crown?

2) Bigger and Better The Olympia is expanding into a larger and more comfortable home: Orleans Arena. This ultramodern amphitheater accommodates more than 9,000 fans in oversized, cushioned seating. Everything has grown this year--except ticket prices. A new $50 ticket category has been added, and with the functional design of the arena, all seats offer great views of the stage. Tickets are selling even faster than usual, so don't delay--get yours today.

3) Conventional Wisdom The Olympia Expo moves into the Las Vegas Convention Center, providing room for more athletic contests, seminars, celebrities and exhibitors than ever before. With dozens of pro competitors, hundreds of fitness celebrities and thousands of spectators, nowhere else on Earth will you see so many inspiring physiques--or so much skin. Also, at no cost to riders, air-conditioned luxury buses will shuttle attendees in style between Orleans Arena and the convention center.

4) Jay Cutler As a three-time Arnold Classic winner and a three-time Mr. O runner-up, Iron Jay is bodybuilding's No. 1 challenger. Taking a tack from the champ himself, Jay sat out all other competitions this year in hopes of hitting the jackpot in October. Will a year of growing make Jay's the winning physique?

5) Ms. Olympia The Ms. O celebrates its 25th anniversary. Watch the world's best female bodybuilders for free with your Expo admission. The ageless Lenda Murray already has a record eight titles--this year she goes for No. 9 against 2004 champ Iris Kyle.

6) Fitness Olympia You won't believe the dexterity and athleticism on display when the world's fittest beauties perform. Adela Garcia defends her title at Orleans Arena on the evening of Friday, Oct. 14.

7) Figure Olympia Held in conjunction with the Fitness O, this competition showcases the most beautiful female physiques on Earth. Two-time champ Davana Medina goes for a three-peat.

8) Gunter Schlierkamp The German Giant is the only man to have beaten Ronnie (at the 2002 Show of Strength) during his Olympia reign. The G-Man is going up to 330 pounds this off-season, determined to deal Ronnie a repeat defeat. Will Gunter, now 35, have the mass appeal for another upset?

9) More Celebrities From Sylvester Stallone to Tom Arnold to Triple H to the Arnold, last year's Olympia Weekend boasted some amazing entertainment and sports celebs. The 2005 installment will be even more star-studded. Don't miss out on the celebrity sightings at the 40th anniversary O.

10) The Challenge Round It's dueling deltoids and battling biceps with everything up for grabs. Nothing is quite as exhilarating as watching the world's best bodybuilders, spurred on by the commentary of WWE superstar Triple H, challenge each other to one-on-one posedowns. This year, the criteria of the Challenge Round have been reworked to make it even more exciting and competitive.

11) The Scoreboard Keeping track of the score in a close competition is one of the major thrills of sport. Fans can stay up-to-the-moment with the state-of-the-art scoreboard, on which scores change instantaneously throughout the Challenge Round as the world's best physiques duke it out pose for pose.

12) Power of the Press Only at the Olympia does the competitors' press conference become a major public event not to be missed.

13) Get Up Close and Personal Greet the champs at the Meet the Olympians event on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 13. Admission is free. This is your chance to talk to the contenders, shake their hands and obtain their autographs.

14) Alexander Fedorov Living in Russia, Alexander has grown (and grown and grown) in virtual obscurity. Yet he finished second only to Ronnie at the 2004 Russian Grand Prix. As the youngest--and perhaps the biggest--competitor at age 27, his American debut is certain to cause a sensation. Some even say he may have enough to bring the Sandow back to St. Petersburg.

15) Bevies of Beauties You'll find the most beautiful women in the world--fit, fantastic and flaunting it--at the Expo, the contests and everywhere in Skin City. Remember, what happens in Vegas ...

16) Judging Round You can bet things will heat up at the Saturday morning judging as Ronnie, Jay and company trade poses side by side. This event separates the contenders from the pretenders and determines who makes Saturday night's Challenge Round.

17) Best Advice Get training lessons from the world's premier bodybuilders at the Olympia Champions Seminar on Sunday, Oct. 16.

18) AV Apex With Orleans Arena's state-of-the-art sound system and video screens, this promises to be the best audiovisual bodybuilding experience ever.

19) Depth of Field Ronnie has plenty of competitors to worry about besides Jay, Gunter and Alexander, any of who could deliver the knockout blow. Among them: the ever-dangerous veteran Chris Cormier; last year's surprise, Gustavo Badell; crowd favorite and mass monster Markus Ruhl (aka "Ruuuuuhl!"); Darrem Charles, a recent winner of both the New York Pro and Toronto Invitational; New York's Dominican Dominator Victor Martinez; and fast-rising star Troy Alves. Good luck, Ronnie.

20) Surprise! The Olympia features at least one major shock each year. Who or what will it be in 2005?
