IBM has transferred its Adstar Distributed Storage Manager from its Storage Systems Division to its Tivoli Systems unit. ADSM is primarily an IBM mainframe software management tool for storage hardware. It is seen as a natural move because it has a better fit with Tivoli as storage middleware than in SSD, which is more a hardware unit, according to Illuminata Research. Tivoli Enterprise is now a product suite covering all functions instead of a manager of managers. This might lead to in-house product favoritism but is unlikely to cause major problems with BMC, CA's Arcserve or Compuware, which are independent IBM mainframe software vendors, according to Steve Barry, analyst at Lifecycle Technical Research.
