The Theatre by the Lake in Keswick is again playing host to the Words by the Water festival in Cumbria, and this year's line-up is bigger and better than ever. The programme is now available, giving details of 10 days of literary antics from 10-19 March, featuring family events, performing poets, workshops and masterclasses, as well as a wealth of opportunities to meet well-known writers.
The festival opens with an evening of poetry from Jean 'Binta' Breeze, Patience Agbabi, Shamshad Khan and local boy Jacob Polley (pounds 12). The first weekend finds Diana Melly discussing life with husband George " who gets to have his say the following day " Simon Gray reflecting upon a life in the theatre, Tony Benn making music with Roy Bailey(pounds 12), and Joanna Trollope exploring 'Empty Nest Syndrome'.
The week continues with a poetry prom in the company of, among others, Helen Dunmore, Elaine Feinstein and James Fenton (Mon, pounds 12). Magnus Magnusson visits on Tuesday to share stories of Iceland. The history of terrorism is under the spotlight on Wednesday, as Terry Eagleton brings his learning to bear on the topic. For light relief, he's followed by master parodist Christopher Matthew. Thursday is fiction day " among the novelists appearing are Penelope Lively, Joseph Connolly, Hilary Mantel and Philippa Gregory " and the historians (Juliet Barker and Tom Holland are just two) are out in force on Friday.
The closing weekend is also stuffed with celebrity " Richard E Grant, Kate Adie, Joan Bakewell, Brian Patten, Jon Snow, Michael Buerk, Roger McGough " the list goes on.
