GlaxoSmithKline produced an "environmentally friendly" version of the asthma inhaler Ventolin HFA (albuterol sulfate HFA inhalation aerosol). Instead of using ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons as an accelerant to propel the medication into the lungs, the new formulation uses hydrofluoroalkane. It is the first HFA product to be introduced from GSK in the United States. About 48 million albuterol prescriptions were dispensed in the United States in 2001.
