The article "Combination HRT Linked to Dementia in Older Women" (July 1, 2003, p. 1) was based on a JAMA report (289[20]:2651-62, 2003) that presented only figures and nothing about how the women lived, whether singly in nursing homes or with families where intergenerational interactions surely played a big role. And if the increase in dementia was the result of vascular accidents, then that should have been specified.
It is interesting that a recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine carried two related articles (348[25]:2489-90; 2508-16) that contradict the JAMA report. We all know how statistics can be manipulated.
After reading the article "Break Anogenital Itch-Scratch Cycle With Sedatives" (June 15, 2003, p. 17), I wanted to remind physicians to be sure to rule out pinworm infection, which may easily be treated with Vermox. Years ago we used Povan, which was dosed according to the patient's weight and got somewhat complicated when the entire family was involved.
