TOKYO, Oct. 27 Kyodo
Yasuo Fukuda, who has replaced scandal-hit Hidenao Nakagawa as the chief cabinet secretary, is well-versed in foreign policy, as he once served as parliamentary vice minister in the Foreign Ministry and headed the Foreign Affairs Division of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
Fukuda, a 64-year-old businessman-turned-politician, is the eldest son of the late Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda. While serving as a secretary to his father, Fukuda worked with Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori when Mori was a deputy chief cabinet secretary.
Despite never having held a cabinet post, Fukuda was handpicked for his current job to support the cabinet just as it is being rocked by scandals surrounding Nakagawa, the prime minister's closest aide.
Fukuda's selection was made after an LDP faction led by Mori but run by former Health and Welfare Minister Junichiro Koizumi reviewed Fukuda's ''personality, talent and experience.''
Fukuda is known for his calm and trustworthy character.
A graduate of Waseda University, also Mori's alma mater, he became his father's secretary after working for an oil company for 17 years. He was born in Tokyo but was elected to the House of Representatives four times from a constituency in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo.
He also heads the Japan-Sri Lanka Association, based in Tokyo.
