FPL Energy recently joined with Exelon Corporation and West Virginia governor Bob Wise to dedicate a new 44-turbine wind energy facility located along the ridge of Backbone Mountain in Thomas, WV, that the company claims will be the "largest wind farm in the east." FPL Energy, which purchased the 66-megawatt wind farm from Richmond, VA-based Atlantic Renewable Energy Corporation, said all electricity generated by the facility will be sold to Exelon.
"Taking advantage of wind...puts us in a unique position to further economic development in the region and generate clean power," said Wise during the dedication.
FPL Energy, a subsidiary of FPL Group, is an unregulated wholesale generator of energy, including 30 wind facilities in operation in 10 states, which represents more than 20 percent of the company's portfolio. Exelon Corporation, headquartered in Chicago, distributes electricity to approximately five million electric customers in Illinois and Pennsylvania.
