SECTION II
a. each 5 ml contains:
promethazine HCl, 6.25 mg; codeine phosphate, 10 mg
Used to relieve cough associated with cold and allergy, this combination contains promethazine, an antihistamine, and codeine, an opioid antitussive. Tell your patient to see how it affects him before he drives because it can cause drowsiness.
b. methenamine, 162 mg; sodium salicylate, 162.5 mg; benzoic acid, 32 mg
This nonprescription drug is used to treat chronic urinary tract infections. It contains methenamine, which combats infection, and sodium salicylate, an anti-inflammatory pain reliever. Benzoic acid is a mild antibacterial/antifungal agent. Tell your patient to take this combination with food to prevent stomach upset.
c.fluticasone propionate, 100 mcg, 250 mcg, 500 mcg; salmeterol, 50 mcg
Used as maintenance treatment for asthma, this inhaled agent contains fluticasone, a corticosteroid, and salmeterol, a long-acting beta^sub 2^-agonist. Warn your patient not to use it for acute attacks because it doesn't induce bronchodilation right away.
d. benzoyl peroxide, 5%; clindamycin, 1%
Prescribed to treat acne, this gel contains benzoyl peroxide, an antibacterial, and clindamycin, a topical antibiotic. Teach your patient to wash his skin before applying it and to keep it away from his eyes. He should store the unused portion at room temperature and discard it after 2 months.
e. clonidine, 0.1 mg, 0.2 mg, 0.3 mg; chlorthalidone, 15 mg
Indicated for high blood pressure, this combination contains clonidine, a centrally acting alpha^sub 2^-receptor agonist, and chlorthalidone, a thiazide diuretic. Warn your patient not to skip doses or stop the drug abruptly, which can cause rebound hypertension.
