Manufactured and distributed by Eli Lilly and Company, Darvocet is a brand name for mild narcotic analgesic drug which combines Acetaminophen and Propoxy or Propoxyphene, prescribed for the relief of mild to moderate pain, with or without fever. Darvocet-N, Pronounced: DAR-voe-set en contains Propoxyphene napsylate and Acetaminophen. Propoxyphene napsylate, USP is an odorless, white, crystalline powder with a bitter taste. It is very slightly soluble in water and soluble in methanol, ethanol, chloroform, and acetone. Chemically, it is (aS,1R)-a--a-phenylphenethyl propionate compound with 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid (1:1) monohydrate. Its molecular weight is 565.72.

In long term use, some patients can develop renal toxicity due to the acetoaminophen part of Darvocet. Also, Propoxyphene may be habit forming. Physical and/or psychological dependence can occur, and withdrawal effects are possible if the medication is stopped suddenly after prolonged or high-dose treatment.
