Drug challenge
From Nursing, 5/1/01 by Gever, Marcy Portnoff

You routinely administer combination drugs.. but do you know what's in them? To find out, match each combination of ingredients in Section II with its correct name in Section I.

SECTION I

1. Malarone (Glaxo Wellcome)

2. Accuretic (Parke-Davis)

3. Entex PSE (Dura)

4. Mytrex (Savage)

5. Lorcet (Forest)

SECTION II

a. pseudoephedrine HCI, 120 mg; guaifenesin, 600 mg

Prescribed to treat nasal and bronchial congestion, this extended-release combination contains pseudoephedrine, a decongestant, and guaifenesin, an expectorant. If your patient has hypertension, tell her to monitor her blood pressure while taking this medication and to contact her health care provider if it increases.

b. each 1 gram contains: nystatin, 100,000 units; triamcinolone acetonide, 1 mg

This cream may be used to treat diaper rash caused by candidiasis. Nystatin is an antifungal; triamcinolone, a corticosteroid. Tell your patient's caregiver to apply the cream as directed for 5 to 7 days to treat the infection. c. hydrocodone bitartrate, 10 mg; acetaminophen, 650 mg Indicated for the treatment of moderate pain, this combination contains hydrocodone, an opioid analgesic, and acetaminophen, a nonopioid analgesic. Tell your patient not to take this medication with alcoholic beverages, which could cause severe dizziness and drowsiness. d. quinapril HCI, 10 mg, 20 mg; hydrochlorothiazide, 12.5 mg, 25 mg Used to treat hypertension, this combination contains quinapril, an ACE inhibitor, and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. Tell your patient to take this combination in the morning to avoid excessive urination overnight. e. atovaquone, 250 mg; proguanil HCI, 100 mg Prescribed to treat malaria in adults, this combination contains atovaquone and proguanil, which are both antimalarial agents. Tell your patient to take four tablets at a time for 3 consecutive days and to take them with food or milk to enhance absorption and prevent stomach upset.
