Actos

In medicine and pharmacology, pioglitazone is a member of the drug class of the thiazolidinediones.

It is being marketed as Actos® by the pharmaceutical companies Takeda and Eli Lilly.

Like other thiazolidinediones, its mechanism of action is by activation the intracellular receptor class of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), specifically PPARγ.

Priority review for Actos
From Drug Store News, 4/26/99

The FDA has granted priority review to [Actos.sup.TM] (pioglitazone hydrochloride) tablets, an investigational treatment of type 2 diabetes. The agency's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Endocrinologic and Metabolic Advisory Committee was expected to review the drug on April 23. If the drug receives regulatory approval, it will be co-promoted by Takeda Pharmaceuticals America and Eli Lilly & Co. Actos belongs to the thiazolidinediones class of drugs, insulin sensitizing agents that help restore the body's ability to effectively use its own insulin by reducing insulin resistance.
