Some forms of hormonal birth control can exacerbate migraines, while others may help.
Good picks
* Monophasic pills that provide a constant amount of hormones all month long and contain between 20 and 30 micrograms of estrogen (examples: Alesse, Levlite, Mircette, Desogen and Nordette)
* If migraines continue, switching to continuous use (don't take the usual "placebo" week off) or wearing an estrogen patch during that week may help.
* The ParaGard copper-T IUD (as long as you're mutually monogamous)
Poorer choices
* Depo-Provera and Lunelle injections (Their use by women with migraines hasn't been studied, and they stay in the body for several weeks.)
The Progestasert and Mirena IUDs (They release hormones.)
