Florida land case: A federal appeals court has rejected a claim from a Florida developer for government compensation because of environmental restrictions on use of his land, handing property rights advocates a major defeat. The three-judge panel said that developer Lloyd A. Good Jr., who had wanted to fill in wetlands to build a housing complex in the Florida Keys, was not entitled to compensation even though the restrictions substantially reduced the value of his property.
Car theft rings: Two Philadelphia-based car theft rings that stretched across five states and stole thousands of cars worth $40 million have been shut down, federal authorities said Thursday. Forty-seven people were arrested Thursday morning in Philadelphia and New Jersey, from alleged gang leaders to copy shop employees who allegedly duplicated car titles.
Malaria treatment: Scientists have discovered a possible new drug for malaria, an antibiotic that seemed to cure mice by attacking the disease in a different manner than today's treatments. There's no way to know yet if the antibiotic, fosmidomycin, will help people with malaria, which kills up to 3 million people a year worldwide.
