Dapsone

Dapsone is an antibiotic medication most commonly used for the treatment of Mycobacterium leprae infections (leprosy). Dapsone is administered orally.

The primary side effect of this drug is anemia, though other side effects, including nausea, headache, and peripheral neuropathy have been known to occur in patients on this medication.

Dapsone is thought to act by depleting the body's stores of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA).

Dapsone Hypersensitivity Syndrome

A 23-year-old woman with linear IgA dermatosis developed dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome (DHS) after initiation of dapsone therapy. She had fever, jaundice with hepatic dysfunction, lymphadenopathy, anemia and dermatitis. The symptoms disappeared with methylprednisolone treatment 40 mg/day.Journal of Clinical Dermatology
