Gunman sentenced
Jesse Robinson, 34, of Baltimore, was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore to 235 months in prison, followed by four years of supervised release, following his conviction in September of being a felon in possession of a handgun. Robinson was sentenced under the Armed Career Criminal Act, which enhances penalties for certain repeat offenders. According to the U.S. Attorney's office in Baltimore, Robinson was arrested in December 2002 and charged with the attempted murder of Carlton Randolph. He was tried in Baltimore City Circuit Court. After a witness recanted and the victim refused to testify, the jury deadlocked on all charges. Robinson was scheduled to be retried in state court when he was indicted federally.
Patent suit filed
Classen Immunotherapies Inc., a Baltimore-based, privately held, research stage biopharmaceutical company devoted to discovering safer uses of vaccines, drugs, chemicals and related products, announced yesterday it has filed a patent infringement suit against King Pharmaceuticals Inc., of Bristol, Tenn., Elan Pharmaceuticals Inc., of South San Francisco, Calif., and Elan Corp. PLC, of Dublin, Ireland, alleging the companies infringed Classen Immunotherapies' patented processes directed to the discovery, analysis and commercialization of adverse drug event information. The complaint alleges that the defendants have sold more than $500 million worth of products, specifically, the muscle relaxant Skelaxin (metaxalone) that infringe on two patents held by Classen.
Father to be tried
A Washington County District Court judge has found probable cause for second-degree murder and child-abuse charges against a Hagerstown man stemming from the death of his 3-year-old daughter. Scott E. Patterson's case was forwarded to circuit court for trial after a hearing Wednesday. Patterson, 26, is accused of killing his daughter, Madyson King. She died Nov. 9, about two weeks after she was hospitalized. During the preliminary hearing, a detective described visible bruises on the girl's body and face. Police allege Patterson hit the girl several times on the evening of Oct. 25 after she knocked over a bucket of water.
