Minutemen Spared at Last Minute. The University of Massachusetts men's and women's swimming teams were saved from the ax. The two swim teams were among nine athletic squads the university had indicated would be cut, but that decision was reversed. The other seven teams, including water polo, were cut.
Best of Swimming Technique on CD. Now there's a new way to improve your swimming. Swimming Technique magazine will be producing a CD version of the "Best of Swimming Technique" that will be available to the swimming community in the fall of 2002. Lenny K on TV. If you happened to be in Russia in April, you would have seen Lenny Krayzelburg providing expert commentary on the Short Course World Championships on TV. Lenny teamed with Russia's Denis Pankratov and 1968 Olympian, Semyon Belitz-Geiman (now living in New York) to cover the Worlds for Russian television.
Olympians on Tour. Olympians Courtney Shealy and Kristy Kowal are in the midst of a four-month, 30-- school tour that will touch the lives of more than 12,000 students. The world-- class swimmers are holding interactive educational seminars at elementary and middle schools as part of the national Arby's Charity Tour (ACT).
Shealy and Kowal are teaching students six values: Dream Big, Work Hard, Get It Done, Play Fair, Have Fun and Make A Difference.
Another Olympian, Chad Carvin, is currently on a month-long tour of Micronesia in a build-up to July's multisport Micronesian Games. Carvin is providing PR for swimming and conducting clinics as he and his brother visit the Marshall Islands ( Majuro), Kwajalein, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, Palau, Guam and Saipan.
Out of Retirement. Ray Essick, 68, former executive director of USA Swimming, has been appointed the new executive director of USA Table Tennis. "I was rusting," said Essick, who retired five years ago. "I had plenty of energy, I was curious and I liked the idea of a new challenge."
Out of This World. Astronaut Steve Smith, former Stanford swimmer and captain of the NCAA champion 1980 water polo team, blasted into orbit on the Atlantis in April for his fourth mission in space for NASA. He has traveled over 12 million miles in space and has completed five space walks totaling 35 hours.
Two Chinese Test Positive. Shan Ying and Zhou Jiawei, two of China's top swimmers, have been suspended after testing positive for clenbuterol-a performance-enhancing beta agonist-in a test conducted on Jan. 31, according to a statement by FINA. Clenbuterol is in the same family as albuterol, the most common-and legal-anti-asthma drug worldwide.
The two swimmers have been temporarily suspended by the Chinese Swimming Association, pending the outcome of an investigation by the CSA.
Coaching Changes. Oakland University has hired coaching legend Ernie Maglischo as a restricted assistant coach.
Pierre LaFontaine has left the Phoenix Swim Club to take a position as an assistant senior coach at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, where he will serve under head coach Mark Regan. His senior assistant coach colleagues at the AIS will be Barry Prime and Gennadi Touretski.
Head swim coach Larry Shofe announced his resignation from the Bolles School, effective Aug. 18, after 15 years of coaching at the Jacksonville, Fla. prep school. After a 36-year career of coaching swimming, Shofe has decided to spend more time with his family and is unsure of what lies ahead. Dr. John E. Trainer Jr., president of Bolles, said he "will work hard to find a replacement who will continue Shofe's ethics, leadership and winning tradition."
